A Bicambered™ airfoil
blade for wind turbines reduces separation and
is an excellent high angle of attack performer.
It can operate at higher lift to drag rations
with minimum separation therefore being more
efficient as well as quieter. Economical production
is possible at lower wind speeds and higher torque
is produced at any speed.
Placement
of wind turbines depends on average wind velocity,
suitable terrain, acceptance of neighboring
residents, and efficiency of extraction of electrical
energy from the wind. The turbine is itself the
largest percentage step-down in efficiency being
around 50% efficient at converting wind to torque
horsepower. This is due to high angle of attack
operation in low wind speeds and loss of attached
flow at the back of the airfoil when blades are
pitched to angles to maximize lift to drag operation.
Any separation of air flow over the blades creates
noise that may be objectionable to nearby residents.
