America’s
Cup Challenger BMW Oracle Uses Bicamber Sail Technology
In
November 2009, America’s
Cup Challenger BMW Oracle Racing unveiled a rigid mainsail comprising
two standard airfoils connected in tandem. This is the
essence of Bicamber Technology. The futuristic trimaran
hull and wing sail incorporate numerous innovations to
bring the CUP back to America. Congratulation
to a great design and racing team! BMW Oracle Wins!
Ernesto
Bertarelli, the leader of the defeated Swiss sailing
team had these comments, "When we realised that
even without the jib, any puff of wind and the wing was
making them go higher and faster we realised that their
set up was a lot more efficient than ours." - Article

The Bicamber Technology
The patented bicamber technology applies to
the upper and lower surfaces of an airfoil rather than
to the camber line through the center of the airfoil. By
having a double camber on both upper and lower surfaces
the center camber line is left a straight line on symmetrical
airfoils, or a smooth single camber curve on asymmetrical
airfoils, just as it would be on ordinary airfoils. Click
